Show your yard some love....

by Julie Teel

As February arrives, it’s the perfect time to prepare your Texas yard for the vibrant spring season. Begin by clearing away debris such as fallen leaves, branches, and weeds to give your lawn a fresh start.

Prune trees and shrubs to encourage healthy growth, focusing on removing dead or damaged limbs. In regions where temperatures remain mild, you can also shape ornamental plants. If your soil is compacted, consider aerating it to improve oxygen flow and nutrient absorption. For flower beds, add a layer of organic mulch to protect roots and regulate soil temperature, setting the stage for thriving blooms.

Don’t forget about your grass and garden! In early February, apply a pre-emergent herbicide to control weeds before they sprout, particularly for common Texas nuisances like crabgrass. Test your soil’s pH and nutrient levels, amending it with compost or fertilizers as needed to ensure optimal growing conditions. Plant hardy vegetables like carrots, spinach, and onions, and start planning for warm-season crops.

With a little effort now, your yard will be ready to burst with life and color as the spring months unfold here at Richland Chambers Lake!
