Keeping your New Year's resolutions...Decluttering Simplified

by Julie Teel

The start of a new year is the perfect time to embrace a fresh start, and for many, that means tackling the clutter that has piled up over the months. But decluttering isn’t just about tidying up; it’s about creating a space that fosters peace and clarity. Clutter doesn’t just take up physical space—it impacts your mental and emotional space, too. Research shows that disorganized homes contribute to stress and lower productivity. A clean, organized space, however, can boost your mood, improve focus, and even help you sleep better. So, decluttering should be about creating a home that nurtures your peace of mind.

Set Manageable Goals

Decluttering is a process, not a one-time event. Break it down into small, achievable tasks. Focus on one area at a time—whether it’s your wardrobe or the kitchen pantry—and tackle it bit by bit. Don’t expect perfection, but celebrate the small wins as you go.

One In, One Out

A great way to keep clutter from creeping back is to adopt the "one in, one out" rule. For every new item you bring home, get rid of something you no longer need. This helps prevent unnecessary accumulation and encourages thoughtful consumption.

Be Ruthless, But Mindful

Parting with items can be tough, especially if they hold sentimental value. But ask yourself: *Does this item add value to my life today?* If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go. Remember, it’s not about being perfect—it’s about making room for what truly matters.

Declutter by Category, Not by Room

Instead of jumping from room to room, declutter by category—clothes, books, kitchen gadgets, etc. This method helps you see the full scope of your possessions and make more intentional decisions about what to keep.

Decluttering is only half the battle. Once you’ve organized your home, create systems to keep it tidy. Invest in storage solutions and labeling that work for your space and make maintenance easy. This year, let decluttering be a tool for creating the space you deserve—physically and mentally. With each item you let go of, you make room for more peace, joy, and clarity. By the time next year rolls around, you might find that decluttering has become a lifestyle, one that brings calm and simplicity to every corner of your home.
